Some years ago, I began to feel burdened about the musical proficiency of local church musicians, not just in theory but in philosophy of music. Someone needed to do something. The need was great, but the landscape seemed barren of options to rectify this issue. Thankfully, the Lord led us to like-minded Christian friends with a similar burden. About two years ago, we were privileged to partner our ministry, Bible Tracts, Inc. (BTI), and our music subsidiary, Paul Levin Studios, with Providence Baptist College and Northwest Bible Baptist Church as we co-hosted the first annual Church Music Seminar.
But why? Why go through the work of educating musicians from across America? There is no money in it. It’s hard enough to make money in secular music, and you might as well not even attempt to make a living through sacred music. Is there a grander purpose at work? What is the root reason for our labors?
I was challenged to codify the purpose of the Church Music Seminar, and below is what God laid on my heart and mind. As you read our purpose, please consider attending our next event, January 13-15th, 2025. You can register HERE.
Our desire is to:
Establish
Building Strong Foundations: Our mission extends beyond the present. We desire to help delegates grow musical proficiency and spiritual convictions that will stand the test of time. As we delve into the nuances of Biblical musicianship, we will focus on creating a solid groundwork upon which participants can confidently build their future musical endeavors.
Engage
Forging Relationships: We are endeavoring to create an environment where delegates can connect with mentors and peers. We aim to nurture lasting bonds, rooted in shared Biblical principles and musical passion, that extend beyond the duration of the seminar.
Encourage
Understanding the ‘Why’: Our program is designed not only to teach the ‘how’ of music but also to examine the ‘why’ by encouraging critical thinking. Participants will explore the theological, historical, and technical context of church music. In short, we don’t answer questions with “Because I said so.”
Equip
Tools for Success: We will offer a comprehensive curriculum encompassing the practical and spiritual aspects of church music. From vocal and instrumental training to lessons on composition and arranging, our participants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute meaningfully to their local churches and beyond.
